How to Stay Cool During Load Shedding in Islamabad โ€“ AC & Non-AC Tips

Despite Islamabad's relatively stable power supply compared to other Pakistani cities, load shedding still affects many areas during peak summer demand. For households without UPS or solar backup, a well-prepared home can stay significantly cooler during outages. Here are practical strategies based on Islamabad's specific climate conditions.

Pre-cool your home before the outage

If you know your area's load shedding schedule, set your AC to 22 to 23ยฐC for 30 to 45 minutes before the expected outage. A well-insulated room (curtains drawn, doors closed) will retain coolness for 45 to 90 minutes after the AC switches off. The thermal mass of furniture, walls, and flooring stores cooling.

Seal your home from heat

During the outage, immediately close all external doors and windows. Draw curtains or blinds on south-facing and west-facing windows as these receive the most solar heat in Islamabad's orientation. Block gaps under external doors with a draught excluder or folded towel.

Use UPS-powered ceiling fans strategically

A ceiling fan consumes 60 to 80 watts versus an AC's 1,200 to 1,800 watts. Even a modest 500W UPS can run 2 ceiling fans for 3 to 4 hours. Fans do not cool air temperature but increase perceived comfort through evaporative cooling from the skin. This is particularly effective in Islamabad's drier air compared to Karachi.

Night ventilation in Islamabad

Islamabad has significantly cooler nights than daytime, even in June and July. Night temperatures can be 10 to 15ยฐC lower than afternoon peaks. After midnight, opening windows and using ceiling fans to cross-ventilate can bring room temperatures down to comfortable levels before sunrise.

Consider solar or UPS for AC during outages

A 3 kW solar hybrid inverter system can run a 1.5-ton inverter AC for 4 to 6 hours on battery backup or continuously during sun hours. AF Tech Fix can recommend HVAC-compatible solar solutions. Call 0311 4714444 for an assessment.
