Most homeowners in Islamabad and Rawalpindi simply switch off the AC in October and forget about it until April. That five-month neglect is a major reason ACs need expensive repairs the moment summer arrives.
1. Run a final cool cycle
On a dry October day, run the AC on Cool mode for 30 minutes, then switch to Fan-only mode for 30 minutes. This dries out internal moisture and prevents mould.
2. Deep clean the filters and indoor unit
Wash filters thoroughly, wipe down the front panel, and vacuum the louvers. Stored dust becomes a launchpad for mould and bacteria over winter.
3. Cover the outdoor unit
Use a breathable polyester cover designed for AC condensers โ never wrap it in plastic, which traps moisture and rusts the coil.
4. Switch off the wall power
Standby mode on modern ACs draws 5โ15 watts continuously, plus your unit is exposed to voltage spikes during winter storms. Switch off at the breaker.
5. Run for 15 minutes monthly
Once a month during winter, run the AC on cool for 15 minutes. This keeps lubricant circulating in the compressor and seals supple.
